India and Russia are advancing high-level discussions on cybersecurity, nuclear energy, and emerging technologies ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming visit for the annual India-Russia summit.

According to a report by The Economic Times, talks have intensified in recent weeks, with both sides looking to strengthen cooperation in areas such as small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and space technology. The momentum follows Operation Sindoor, which has prompted India to reassess its nuclear liability framework and enhance cyber defence strategies.

A delegation from NITI Aayog is expected to participate in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where a special roundtable will focus on Indo-Russian collaboration in science and technology.

On the nuclear front, Russian energy firm Rosatom—developer of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant—has reportedly signed an MoU with the Maharashtra government to explore thorium-based SMRs.

Cybersecurity has emerged as a key pillar of the evolving partnership, with both nations working on joint development of cyber defence tools, firewalls, and security solutions for domestic and global deployment.

The two countries are also exploring joint ventures in critical minerals and next-generation technologies under co-development models similar to the BrahMos missile project.

The upcoming Modi-Putin summit is expected to finalise several of these initiatives, marking a renewed strategic push toward a tech-driven bilateral partnership. (Source: Money Control)
