The National Integrity Commission NIC says it has launched a probe to determine whether the Police were negligent in the murder investigation of Zakiyya Moosa who was found dead in her home in Noonu Holhudhoo.
Zakiyya Moosa, 54, was found dead in her home last September with several stab wounds and her murder weapon nearby. Police have said that there was no visible evidence that suggests that the woman was murdered.
The commission said the public has been making serious allegations against the police for negligence in investigating Zakia's death.
The National Integrity Commission has decided to investigate the matter on its initiative under Article 37 of the Act.
The commission said that it has decided to investigate whether the police have acted in violation of laws and regulations.
NIC began its inquiry on the 20th of this month.
While NIC is investigating the murder probe, the Human Rights Commission of Maldives HRCM is also conducting its own investigation into the murder.
Earlier this year, Police revealed that they were working with the US federal investigation body FBI to solve the alleged murder of the woman who lived alone.
Police said that they have shared their findings with the FBI and that they are seeking their assistance in the investigation.
Police also said that a senior police investigation team has also reviewed the case and has visited the island of Holhudhoo to further study the case.
It added that the Police continue to investigate the case in Holhudhoo.
Protests have been staged in Holhudhoo over the lack of development in the case and the Police' failure to arrest in the case.
