The Housing Ministry says it will release the temporary list of recipients of flats to be awarded under the Gedhoruveriya Housing Scheme next week.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had said that the government was working to release the list before the end of this month in his annual address to the parliament earlier this month.
While many are eagerly awaiting the release of the list, a media official at the Housing Ministry confirmed that the list would be published next week and that it was now undergoing the final stages of verification.
The Ministry assured that the list would be released before the beginning of the Holy month of Ramadan but stopped short of giving an exact date for the release.
The previous government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih released the recipients of the flats mere days before the Presidential election held last year.
Many complained about the unfairness of the point system where many unworthy applicants were awarded higher scores than those who deserved social housing.
The complaints were then submitted to the ACC which launched an investigation of its own against the scheme.
The Commission ordered the Housing Ministry to cease issuing flats in November 2023. When the Commission was summoned to the Parliament's Committee on Independent Entities, it revealed that authorities have unfairly given points to some applicants of the scheme to award them housing flats.
