Former President Mohamed Nasheed says almost all of the air pollution affecting the Maldives is caused by other countries.
His comments come as the country is experiencing seasonal hazy conditions with low visibility and air quality across the Maldives.
Nasheed, who is now the Secretary General of the global climate organization CVF, said via an X post that the Maldives air quality gets worse every year during this season, which is also peak tourist season.
He further said that if it continues it is bound to negatively affect tourism.
Nasheed went onto say that almost all of this pollution blows in from other countries. He also said that all must work together collectively to address the problem.
The hazy conditions in the Maldives have prompted the Health Protection Agency HPA to urge citizens to take caution when going out of their homes, especially small children, elderly people and people with respiratory problems.
