The Environmental Protection Agency EPA and Police have launched an investigation into the dumping of chlorine in the lagoon on the outskirts of Hithadhoo, Addu.

Police said that the incident had been reported to them and that they had immediately launched an investigation.

The Director General of EPA Ibrahim Naeem had also confirmed that the incident had been brought to the agency's attention and that it had also launched an investigation.

Neither police nor EPA revealed any more information about their respective investigations. The chlorine has already killed fish and other marine life in the area and reports have confirmed that 15 empty buckets of expired chlorine were found from the area.

He said the area has been chlorinated and fish and octopuses are dying.

It is not known who carried the chlorine buckets, he said, adding that he did not believe that so much chlorine had been brought for public use.
