The Parliament has backed the appointment of former Permanent Secretary at the Islamic Ministry Abdul Haseeb Ismail to the Elections Commission.

A vacancy would open at the Commission this month as Commission President Fuwad Thaufeek's term comes to an end this November.

President recommended appointing Haseeb to the Commission last month. The Parliament received his name as well as other applicants who are keen to become commission members.

The Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutes deliberated on the names and backed Haseeb for the post.

His appointment to the Commission was put to a vote at the Parliament today and all 67 MPs who took part in the vote, backed Haseeb for the membership.

According to the law, a member of the Election Commission can serve a maximum of two terms of five years. Fuad's membership expires on the 24th of this month
