Environment Minister Ibrahim Thoriq says the power outage issue affecting Addu City will be resolved next month.
Thorig was responding to a question by Hithadu South MP Ibrahim Nazil in the Parliament today about the current efforts to solve the power outage issue in Addu.
The Minister explained that in the last five years, no upgrades have been brought to the City's central power station. He further said that when this administration came into power, the power station was not maintained properly and the spare parts required were lacking.
He assured that the government is now working to rectify these issues.
Noting that at peak hours, Addu City requires 12 Mega Volts of electricity, Thoriq said that 20 generators have been installed to supply electricity to the city but five of them have broken down.
The Minister further said that the total capacity of the 20th generators was around 26.8 Mega Volts but since 5 generators have broken down, they were only producing 15.5 Mega Volts of electricity.
He also noted that for this reason, power outages occur during peak hours. Minister Thoriq said that the government has now brought in a 1.5 mega-volt generator and that it would be installed next month.
The Minister added that authorities have now secured spare parts of 3 of the 5 broken generators and that these two would be made operational in August.
