Maldivian main opposition party MDP has submitted an amendment to the Immigration Act that would allow the country to ban Israelis from entering the Maldives.
The amendment was submitted to the Parliament by the MP for Galolhu South Constituency Meekail Mohamed Naseem. MP Meekail proposed bringing amendments to Article 8 of the Immigration Act. This Article details people who do not have a permit for entry into the Maldives. The MP wants to add additional subsections to the Article.
If the Amendment is passed, Maldivian authorities would ban Israeli passport holders as well as dual citizens with Israeli passports.
In his statement, MP Meekail outlined that though the 19th Parliament had urged the government to take action against Israel's genocide against the people of Palestine, the government has failed to outline its plan of action and a timeline for its action plan.
He said that the purpose of the amendment is to expedite such action by bringing revisions to the law that would allow Maldivian authorities to ban Israeli passports.
The 19th Parliament banned Israeli passports and Israeli products in the resolution it passed on 1st of last month.
