Police have confirmed that a local man had died while trying to save a tourist from drowning.

They said that they received the report of the incident from Centara Resort in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll around 11:05 in the morning. Police said that it was reported that a local man had been under treatment after drowning while trying to save a flailing tourist in the resort.

Police said that the local man was rushed to the nearest Health Center on Dhagethi island of the same Atoll. However, the police cited the Health Center to confirm that the man was declared dead on arrival.

He has been identified as a man named Faisal from Addu City Hithadhoo. He was 39.

Police said that they were further investigating the incident.

The country is experiencing a bout of very bad weather with heavy rain, strong winds and very rough seas.

Earlier this week, Police advised the public to take caution when traveling via sea and not to go for picnics to uninhabited islands and make sandbank trips.

Police also advised against going swmining due to the strong winds and subsequent currents.
