President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says his government is trying to find a solution on how to accommodate people who want to work past the age of 65.

In the Maldives, 65 years is the retirement age after which every individual would be given a retirement pension as per the law.

President Muizzu said in his inaugural Presidential address to the parliament today that for many people who retire at age 65, it can be difficult to leave the service after a long career and have nothing to do.

He noted that the government is trying to find a solution on how to accommodate people who want to work past the age of 65. He mentioned offering jobs to such individuals on a contract basis.

The President said that the government wants to enable people to continue working until they are 75 years old, allowing them to continue making a positive impact on society.

He also announced today that the government would establish a dedicated registry for senior citizens this year. He noted that the cabinet has decided to develop special social centers in Male’ and the atolls for the elderly, as part of the "Hafthaa-14" roadmap.

President Muizzu said that the inaugural center in Male’ will open this year and that plans also include the creation of aged care centres in three regions across the country, to provide compassionate treatment and care for the elderly
