Maldives has begun discussions with India on the withdrawal of its troops stationed in the Maldives.
Local media reports say that a delegation from India headed by the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives Munu Mahawar. He was joined by officials from the Indian Defence Ministry as well as the Special Joint Secretary on Seas Puneeth Agarwal.
From the Maldivian side, the Chief of Staff of the President's Office Abdullah Fayyaz, Chief of Defense Force Major General Abdul Raheem Latheef, Ambassador at Large at the Foreign Ministry Dr. Ali Naseer, and Maldivian High Commissioner to India Ibrahim Shahib.
This was confirmed by the President's office just now at the weekly press briefing being held today. The President's Office said that the discussions are expected to last into the afternoon.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu requested India to withdraw his troops days after coming into power on November 17th. The government said that there are 88 Indian soldiers stationed in the Maldives.
