The Parliament has scheduled a session for tonight to elect a Deputy Speaker of the Parliament after the former Deputy Speaker MP Eva Abdullah resigned from her post earlier today.

Eva resigned after MDP MPs submitted a motion seeking a no-confidence vote against her today. She announced her resignation before the motion was put to a debate and the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam said that the Parliament had received her resignation letter in writing.

The MDP Parliamentary Group has said that three MPs from the party have shown interest in competing for the vacant post.

They include the MP for Kaashidhoo Constituency Abdullah Jabir, the MP for Addu Meedho Constituency Rozaina Adam, and the MP for Horafushi Constituency Ahmed Saleem.

The Spokesperson for the MDP Parliamentary Group MP for Velidhoon Constituency Mohamed Abdullah Shafeeq said that MDP would hold a secrete vote later today to decide on which MP will compete for the Deputy Speaker post on the party's behalf.

In the remarks that lasted more than 30 minutes, the former Deputy Speaker of the Parliament MP Eva said that victory and defeat are measured by people in different manners.

She said that her victory was for her constituents to confidently claim that their Parliament member cannot be pushed back in the face of treason. She also said that her victory was the belief that all leaders who came had that she could not be waivered with the allure of bribes and money.

She concluded her comments by thanking the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam for the opportunity to serve as his Deputy and said that her resignation letter would be given to the Speaker shortly.

Then Parliament minority Leader MP Ali Azim is seen handing over an envelope to the Parliament Secretariate table. A short time later, Speaker Aslam announced that the Deputy Speaker had resigned from her post and that she had informed him of this in writing.
