Former CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company MTCC Adam Azim has decided to compete for the Male' City Mayorship.
Azim is expected to compete in the MDP Primary for the Mayorship in which he is expected to compete with former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof who had also announced that he would be competing for the mayorship.
The post of Male City Mayor became vacant after the former Mayor and current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned from the mayorship on the 17th of this month to take the oath as the 8th President of the Maldives.
Several other seats on the Male' City Council have become vacant after the new government came into power including the seats of Maafannu South Constituency, Central Henveiru Constituency as well and Henveriu South Constituency.
The Elections Commission announced earlier this week that the by-election to fill these seats as well as a seat on the Vaavu Rakeedhoo council and women development committee members for 18 other islands would be held on the 13th of January.
The Commission has now open the application for these seats and said that it would be open till the 13th of next month.
Many have expressed their interest in contesting for the Male' City Mayorship including former Attorney General Azima Shukoor, and former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof.
The Democrats had recently confirmed that current Male' City Councillor Mohamed Saif Fathih would compete for the Mayorship from the party.
