Vice President of the Elections Commission Ismail Habeeb says the Commission will hold the by-election to elect the Mayor of Male' City in January next year.

The post of Male City Mayor became vacant after the former Mayor and current President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu resigned from the mayorship on the 17th of this month to take the oath as the 8th President of the Maldives.

Several other seats on the Male' City Council have become vacant after the new government came into power including the seats of Maafannu South Constituency, Central Henveiru Constituency as well and Henveriu South Constituency.

Habeeb said that the by-election to fill these seats as well as a seat on the Vaavu Rakeedhoo council and women development committee members for 18 other islands would be held on the 13th of January.

He said that the candidacy for these posts would be open starting tomorrow till the 13th of December. He further said that the permanent results of the elections would be announced within in two working days.

Many have expressed their interest in contesting for the Male' City Mayorship including former Attorney General Azima Shukoor, and former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof.

The Democrats had recently confirmed that current Male' City Councillor Mohamed Saif Fathih would compete for the Mayorship from the party.
