The Petitions Committee of the Parliament passed a petition calling for a ban on Israelis entering Maldives.

The Right Movement submitted a petition with 1,000 signatures to parliament last week. The petition mainly calls for a ban on Israelis entering Maldives.

Speaking at a meeting of the Petitions Committee Thursday, Keyodhoo MP Hassan Gasim said the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament had accepted the resolution moved by Vilingilli MP Saud Hussain.

Gasim proposed two ways to proceed with the petition. it is:

  • Petition work in conjunction with the Foreign Relations Committee, or
  • The Petitions Committee shall decide and refer it to the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Kela MP Ibrahim Shareef said the Foreign Relations Committee would give the best advice on this. Therefore, he moved to hand over the petition to the committee after completion of the work to expedite the work.

However, Democrats disagree. MP Mohamed Waheed and Henveyru West MP Hassan Lateef moved that the petition committee should complete the work of the petition. Both said the petitions committee can decide on a complaint submitted by the public.

The motion by two MDP members to the Foreign Affairs Committee was not put to the vote as none of the members supported it.

However, all the members present at the committee meeting unanimously passed the petition and decided to notify the concerned parties.

Some of the previous decisions taken by the parliament regarding the ban on Israeli passports:

• The Foreign Relations Committee of Parliament has decided to recommend to the government to ban Israelis from entering the country

• The motion was passed by the House of Representatives and referred to the Foreign Relations Committee
