Former Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Abdullah Mohammed (Madhanee Abdullah) has been detained at the airport in Malaysia.

He reportedly flew to Malaysia on a Betik Air flight early last night. Abdullah was arrested by Malaysian immigration on charges of encouraging terrorism.

However, the Maldivian authorities have not yet commented on the matter.

He is currently not under arrest at the airport and will be sent back to Maldives on a flight as soon as possible.

Madhanee Abdullah was previously a state minister in the Home Ministry. He was also the leader of the "Civil Coalition" which formed several civil society organizations years ago.

He has recently become known for speaking out against the presence of Indian troops in Maldives. He has also spoken on the topic on various podiums and on Channel 13 shows.
