President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says the public referendum to change the governance system currently in place would go on regardless of the outcome of the Presidential Elections.

He made these comments while speaking to reporters outside his office today after an impromptu meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.

Speaking after the brief meeting with the Speaker, President Solih said both of them discussed the current political landscape of the country and also touched on the resolution calling for a public referendum to change the governance system that was passed by the parliament last Thursday.

He further said that they talked about Nasheed backing the President for the Presidential Run-Off scheduled for next Saturday.

The President revealed that Nasheed had said that he and the Democrats would remain neutral for the run-off as they had previously decided and that they talked about the President pushing for the system change vote at the Elections Commission.

When pushed more on the details of their discussion on the system change, President Solih assured that regardless of the outcome of the Presidential run-off, the system change vote would continue. But he stopped short of giving any more details on the matter.

The Elections Commission had revealed recently that it was making preparations to hold the public referendum on the 29th of next month.
