Maldives Correctional Services says it has once against extended the permit given to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb who is serving a 20-year jail sentence in relation to the MMPRC scandal.

This is the 2nd time the Correctional Services has extended the permit issued to Adeeb to go abroad for medical purposes as he must do diagnostic tests that are not available in the Maldives.

It said that the permission was given upon the recommendation of the Medical Board.

He was initially given 10 days on the 12th of last month but the government later extended his abroad stay till the 28th of this month.

While this date has also passed, Correctional Services confirmed today that another extension has been given to Adeeb.

It said that he has been allowed to extend his stay till the 15th of next month. Though Adeeb initially departed to Singapore, it is unclear whether he is still in the country. But the Correctional Services had said that it would continue to monitor his movements along with the Police.

Adeeb was recently admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital Emergency Services and his party Maldives Third-way Democrats MTD stated that Adeeb is suffering from a serious and life-threatening medical condition related to neurology.

It further said that this diagnosis was made after his prolonged period of being locked up in solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018 in a cell locked for 24 hours for three years, against all International conversations and Maldivian laws that classify such treatment as inhumane.
