The new academic year has kicked off in the Maldives today.

In its statement on the occasion, the Education Ministry said that the new academic began with more than 84,000 students. It said that out of that 73,000 students would be studying in 216 public schools across the country.

The Ministry said that 25,000 students out of this would be going to schools in the Greater Male' Area.

It also noted that this year, more than 7,000 students have been enrolled in grade 1 and that out of 2,491 students have been enrolled in schools in the capital.

The Ministry said that 156 schools across the country would only be one-session schools as per the government's education policy.

It also highlighted that satellite schools have been established in 6 islands including Thinadhoo, Rakeedhoo, Fehendhoo, Fulhadhoo, Kondey, and Dhidhoo.

Education Ministry said that 8,359 teachers would be teaching across the country and that this includes 6,516 locals and 1,843 foreigners.

The Ministry noted that this academic year, 3 school buildings are being newly used, and this includes the new buildings of the Center for Higher Education as well as the new building of Dharumavantha school. It said that a new school has opened today in Hulhumale Phase II named Salaahudheen school and all three are one-session schools.
