Police say they arrested MP for Kudahuvadhoo Constituency for not stopping at a Police Check Point in Hulhumale' Phase II last night.
This came after a video of police officers violently arrested has been circulated on social media.
Police said in their comments to the media that they had set up a police Check Point at Hulhumale' Phase II last night around 12:55 am and officers present at the checkpoint attempted to stop a motorist who ignored the checkpoint. Police said that the individual, who is believed to be the MP, refused to stop and used indecent language against the officers.
Police said that the officers had then chased the rider as he was riding at a dangerous speed and stopped the motorist. Police said that the individual then refused to give his information to the officer and was taken under police custody for refusing to obey orders.
Police stated that the MP was taken to their station in Phase II and released after taking his information. While his vehicle has been towed, Police added that this case is now under investigation.
In the video, MP Amir is heard repeatedly asking the Police Officers not to hurt him.
