Maldives Correctional Services says it has extended the 10-day permit given to former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb who is serving a 20-year jail sentence in relation to the MMPRC scandal.
Adeeb was initially allowed to go to Singapore on the 12th of this month for 10 days and Correctional Services said then that the permit was granted to him to go abroad for medical purposes as he must do diagnostic tests that are not available in the Maldives.
It said that the permission was given upon the recommendation of the Medical Board.
While the 10 days were up earlier this week, Correctional Services tweeted today to say that it has now extended the period given to Adeeb till the 28th of next month.
Correctional Services said that the time given to Adeeb was extended as the documents pertaining to his stay were submitted to the Correctional Services before the initial 10 days were up.
It had said before that that it along with the Police would be monitoring Adeeb while he was abroad.
Adeeb was recently admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital Emergency Services and his party Maldives Third-way Democrats MTD stated that Adeeb is suffering from a serious and life-threatening medical condition related to neurology.
It further said that this diagnosis was made after his prolonged period of being locked up in solitary confinement from 2015 to 2018 in a cell locked for 24 hours for three years, against all International conversations and Maldivian laws that classify such treatment as inhumane.
