President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih outlines it is not feasible to leave the whole fishing industry to the private sector and that the government should work to develop the industry.
He made the remarks while speaking to MDP supporters in Haa Alifu Ihavandhoo on his trip to the Northern Atolls of Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu for his re-election campaign.
The gathering was moved to the MDP party center due to bad weather.
Addressing his supporters, President Solih said that Ihavandhoo and the surrounding area are habituated by a productive bunch of people but pointed out that since 1950 they have economically weakened.
He said that the purpose of the administration is to bring back the glorious past of the area.
In his remarks, President mentioned the challenges faced by fishermen across the country.
Criticizing the previous administration, the President said that fishermen were neglected as it was difficult for them to get oil for their vessels and money for their catch.
He added that former governments were all talk when it came to helping fishermen.
He went on to say that it was not entirely feasible to leave the fisheries industry to the private sector but did not give his reasoning for this conclusion.
The President is continuing his campaign trip in Haa Alifu Atoll today.
