Police say they have deployed additional officers to prevent traffic congestion near Velaana International Airport as the first batch of Hajj Pilgrims depart to Saudi Arabia later today.

They said that Hajj Pilgrims would be departing starting today till the 19th of this month and the traffic would be congested in and around VIA during this time.

Police stated in order to ensure smooth operations of the airport and the surrounding area, additional police officers would be deployed to the area.

Police also advised travelers other than pilgrims must be mindful of the traffic congestion and take necessary action.

They assured that the Police officers would be doing everything that can to ensure smooth operations for all.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has granted the Maldives 1000 Hajj quotas this year and the Islamic Ministry confirmed that the first of the Hajj Pilgrims from the Maldives will depart tomorrow.

The Ministry said that a total of 6 flights carrying pilgrims are scheduled to depart in the coming days with the latest flight scheduled to depart on the 19th of this month.

Hajj flights have also been scheduled for the 13, 15, and 16 of this month.
