President of Maldives National Party MNP Mohamed Nazim says if his party has to join forces with the opposition in order to defeat the current administration, he would do it and then bring down the government successfully.
He said these remarks at the anti-government gathering held last night to protest against the government's decision to cede part of the country's EEZ by giving up on its claim to the Chagos territory.
While the gathering was organized by the PPM/PNC opposition coalition, leaders and supporters from MNP as well as the newly formed Democrats were present at the rally last night.
Speaking at the rally, Nazim said that the Maldives has now lost part of its sovereignty and that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih does not have the moral authority to stay on as the leader of the country.
Nazim said that while the country has enjoyed 50 years of independence, none of those who led the country have ceded part of its territorial waters but with just one letter the current regime has incurred a huge loss on Maldivian fishermen and its citizens.
He further said that the current government has failed in its duties and must be overthrown. He added that he won't give in one inch in this pursuit.
Last month, the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) supported the Maldives’ stance while concluding the dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius on the overlapping maritime boundary issue.
The verdict favored the Maldives in its claim, according to 47232 sq kilometers - the larger portion of the overlapping area- to the Maldives.
But many are saying that with this decision, the Maldives is ceasing part of its EEZ to implement this decision.
