Addu City Council says work on the city's reclamation work would begin today.

TSHD Dredging - HAM 318 has been brought to Addy City today and the work will start from Hithadhoo Zone-2 area.

Van Oud Dredging of the Netherlands is carrying out the dredging work. Van Ood said in a statement on its website that the project is also linked to climate change and environmental protection. It said that therefore, the project will be carried out with all necessary safety measures taken and in consultation with experts.

Addu City Council says that the largest development project in Addu City will solve the land problem in the city for the next 50 years.

The project is expected to cost USD 70-75 million under a USD 800 million line of credit facility from the Exim Bank of India.

In addition to three villages in Addu City, five new Islands will be dredged for resorts. The project will dredge 194.3 hectares of land.

These include 90 hectares of land in Hithadhoo, 3 hectares in Hulhumeedhoo, two five-hectare islands near Hulhumeedhoo, 76 hectares in Maradhoo, three islands of 3 hectares, and two villages of 3.3 hectares.

Most of the work of constructing band walls in the dry zones of Addu City has already been completed. Rivetment work is being carried out to protect the area. The installation of the dredger pipelines has now been completed and the dredging work will be completed by August and September.
