Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says the fact that a public referendum was taken on the governance system years back does not mean such a vote cannot be taken now.

Nasheed made the comments while speaking at the 'Thila Uthuru Award' ceremony held at Haa Alifu Dhihdhoo.

The former President said that it is incumbent upon the people to hold a public referendum vote on a governance system in the Maldives.

Noting that this was the time to hold the vote and make preparations, Nasheed that the issue must be taken to the people and give them the chance to cast their votes on the matter.

Pointing out that there are many changes that need to be made in the constitution, he said that there are many Maldivians who feel that there is a need to change the system of Governance.

He added that if action is not taken now, the future would be dire for the country.

Nasheed, who has always advocated the need for a change in the country's Governance system, also shared some other changes to the Constitution. He said that there is a need to strengthen this county's justice system, establish a fair judiciary and establish the appointment of supreme court judges via the Constitution.
