Maldives Police Service says reporting on suicide cases and attempted suicides increases the number of such cases.
This comes as a report surfaced that a 12-year-old has been found hanging in Gaafu Alifu Atoll Faresmaathoda.
Police said in a message to the media that research has shown that reporting about suicide cases increases the number of such cases in society and that it did not encourage such reporting.
Police also said that they themselves would not be providing information on suicide cases and attempted suicide cases from now on.
Generally in the Maldives, suicides are underreported in the media but a recent spike in cases and the spread of online news reporting have increased the instances where news outlets are reporting on such cases.
Mental Health awareness in the Maldives have come a long way in the last few years but suicide still remain a taboo subject in the country.
