Home Minister Imran Abdullah says the leadership of the opposition coalition is acting in a way that suggests that its Presidential ticket would be given to the individual who makes the most fuss about the Chagos dispute.
In a tweet, Imran said that individuals within the opposition's leadership seem to think that they can win the Presidential ticket by talking the most about the Chagos dispute and by leading more protests against the government's stance.
He said that the number of individuals working in this manner is increasing.
Though the leader of the Adhaalath party has criticized the Opposition's stance on the Chagos dispute, all the other political parties have banded together to voice out their concerns about the decision taken by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITOLS).
Earlier this month, the ITLOS supported the Maldives’ stance while concluding the dispute between the Maldives and Mauritius on the overlapping maritime boundary issue.
The verdict favored the Maldives in its claim, according to 47232 sq kilometers - the larger portion of the overlapping area- to the Maldives.
But many are saying that with this decision, the Maldives is ceasing part of its EEZ to implement this decision.
