MP for Maafannu Uthuru Constituency Imthiyaz Fahmy has lodged a complaint at the Police stating that Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed may be a target of another attack.

The MP's complaint via a letter to the Police follows after several parliamentarians voiced concern over the financial expenses of managing the former President's security.

MP Imthiyaz said that he submitted the complaint as influential political individuals were insinuating that the State should stop giving the Speaker security details.

Noting that the Speaker had been a target of a dangerous assassination attempt, MP Imthiyaz said in his letter to the Police that the Speaker is yet to receive justice for that attack. He mentioned that Nasheed was targeted when the Parliament's Security Service Committee noted that the danger to the Speaker was critical in its inquiry report.

MP Imthiyaz further said that Nasheed was still the Speaker and was also a former President and that it is disconcerting to hear the Chairperson of the Parliament Security Services Committee Hussain Shameem and the Chair of Parliament's Independent Entities Committee speak against providing security to the Speaker.

In his letter to the Police, MP Imthiyaz said that speaking about halting the security given to the Speaker was the first sinister step of another attack against him.

He requested the Police to further investigate the threat and to determine whether there have been any criminal acts up to this point in relation to the matter.

Nasheed was targeted in May of 2021 when an IED was detonated outside his home in Male' just as he stepped out to go to an appointment. He was severely injured and required months-long treatment abroad. Four others were injured in the attack.
