The Parliament has thrown out a motion calling for action against Defence Minister Mariya Ahmed who publically ridiculed the head of PPM's Hulhumale' branch Abdul Samad after he was detained and deported from India while on a trip with his family.

The motion was submitted by the MP for Faresmaathoda Constituency Hussain Mohamed Latheef.

Speaking in Parliament today, MP Hussain said that while the Minister made fun of Samad is a retired soldier and someone who is always ready to defend the security and sovereignty of the country.

Noting that the Defence Minister had ridiculed soldiers, the MP called on the government to investigate her case and take action against the Minister.

When the motion was put to vote, 31 out of the 39 MPs voted against accepting the motion for debate while only 8 members voted for the motion.

Abdul Samad was detained in India for 18 hours and deported on the 13th of this month and said upon his return that the Indian authorities did not tell him why he was detained and informed him that he was now prohibited from traveling to and from India.

Speaking at the MDP rally last night, Minister Mariya belittled Samad's ordeal and insinuated that he was a coward.
