Health Protection Agency HPA has warned of a rise in the number of conjunctivitis (pink eye) cases being reported in the country recently.

HPA said today, they had noticed the rise in the number of cases of pink eye and advised that the public must be aware of the symptoms of the disease and take precautionary measures.

The Agency indicated that conjunctivitis can be caused by a viral infection as well as a bacterial infection. It said that the symptoms of Conjunctivitis include itching, irritation, and/or burning of the eye, increased tear production, as well as crusting of eyelids or lashes, especially in the morning.

HPA advised the public to seek medical treatment if they contract Conjunctivitis as soon as possible.

The Agency also said that members of the public should wash their hands frequently to avoid the spread of the disease and to clean and wipe surfaces that are frequently touched.

HPA recommended avoiding touching or rubbing the eyes and safely throwing away used tissues and napkins.

The Agency added that those who have not been afflicted with the disease must not use medicine prescribed to those who have contracted Conjunctivitis.
