Male' City Council says 166 migrant workers have been left stranded due to the fire at the accommodation block near Neelan fihaara earlier today.
The Neelaan fihaara is a store that sells and auctions used items and most of the items at the store are used furniture and electronics. The fire was reported around 5:45 am in the morning but it took authorities a while to control the fire and not before it spread to the accommodation block.
City Council said that the accommodation block housed 165 Bangladeshi nationals and 1 Indian.
Speaking about the stranded migrants, Male' City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the Council was working to find temporary shelters for the workers but so far has been unable to make the arrangements.
He further said that it was difficult for the Council to make arrangements for a such large amount of people in such a short time and that it was working with the National Disaster Management Authority to make the arrangements in a timely manner.
It took firefighters from Maldives National Defense Force MNDF and Maldives Airports Company Ltd MACL to control the fire that was initially reported around 05:43 am. The fire was fully extinguished around 08:30 am.
No one was injured in the fire.
