He further said that the child was transferred to Male' because the patient was bleeding from the nose and mouth as well as internal organs and that the child passed away earlier this morning.

The child was brought in from an island in Raa Atoll.

Dr. Faisal mentioned that 3 children from Meemu Atoll are now under treatment for Dengue fever at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and that their conditions are not serious.

He added that Dengue is still spreading rapidly in the country and especially in the islands.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease that has rapidly spread to all regions of WHO in recent years and is caused by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, Ae. albopictus.

These mosquitoes are also vectors of chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika viruses. Dengue is widespread throughout the tropics, with local variations in risk influenced by climate parameters as well as social and environmental factors.
