Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has praised the amendment to the Constitution proposed by the MP for Maamigii Constituency Qasim Ibrahim to keep the number of MPs at a specific level.

The leader of JP had proposed to maintain the number of MPs elected to the parliament as 87.

In a tweet, Nasheed described the amendments proposed by MP Qasim as vital. Nasheed further said that it was important to hold discussions on how the parliament is compiled and what the role of the parliament is.

Explaining his proposal, MP Gasim said that with each successful election to appoint MPs, the number of parliamentarians has increased.

He further said that if the number of MPs keeps on increasing with each election, it would have economical ramifications on the country.

MP Qasim said that it was vital that the Constitution states the number of MPs that would be elected to the parliament and that such an amendment should be made to the document.
