President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has requested Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed to take back the resolution he had submitted to MDP's congress regarding changing the governance system to a parliamentary system.

In an interview with Raaje TV, President Solih said that he did not support a parliamentary system of governance.

The President said that this is the time to work to find solutions for the pressing matters in the country and that it was not the time to change the governance system in the country.

He further said that the Maldivian political system is not ready for a parliamentary system of governance and that many milestones must be achieved before a system change.

The President said that the people of the country must be made aware of what the change in the system would mean and that they must be educated on the system change. He added that before the system is changed debates and discussions must be held with the public.

The President's comments came as Speaker Nasheed hosted discussions regarding the parliamentary system at the MDP headquarters last night. He invited members to join him for the discussion and said that it would continue tonight too.

Nasheed's initiative followed his public release of the amendments that would be brought to the constitution that would pave way for the system change.
