The new academic year has begun across schools nationwide today.
The schools reopened after a month and a half of holidays that began at the end of June this year.
The Education Ministry said around 92,300 students would be attending school this academic year and that this includes students from both public and private schools.
It further said that 217 schools across the country would be opening their gates for the students and that all teachers and other arrangements at the schools have now been completed.
The Minister said that a total of 8,364 teachers would be active this academic year. It said that this includes 6,006 local teachers, 1693 foreign teachers, and 665 relief teachers.
The academic year kicks off at the back of rain-filled school holidays bogged down by bad weather. It was the first school holiday after the government decided to change the beginning of the academic year to the middle of the year last year.
Many have been complaining about the change as the holidays fell on monsoon rains and ruined vacation plans.
