Waste Management Corporation WAMCO says since it started segregating waste, the number of plastic bottles being thrown as waste has increased by 27 percent.

WAMCO had implemented its amended waste collection policy at the beginning of this month under which it had said that only segregated waste would be collected.

The Corporation had set three categories for segregation including wet waste, plastic bottles, and mixed waste.

WAMCO said with this change in waste collection, the amount of plastic bottles being thrown as waste has increased by 27 percent.

It said that before waste segregation was introduced, plastic bottles had been mixed in with other waste.

WAMCO further said that this had in turn hindered attempts to recycle used plastic bottles.

Before waste segregation, WAMCO had been collecting 1,300 dustbins of waste. It said that in the last 7 days it had collected 49 percent of wet waste and 51 percent of other waste.

WAMCO said 15 percent of households under its service have been segregating their waste.

It had said that many households had accepted the recent change in waste collection and many are now practicing good waste disposable rules such as filling the waste bags before leaving them for collection.
