The Parliament had thrown out an emergency motion that called on the government to control the prices of commonly used goods in the Maldives.

The emergency motion was submitted to the floor by the MP for the Maduvaree constituency Adam Shareef.

Speaking during his submission, MP Shareef said the cost of goods has risen beyond the reach of the public, and with the rise of inflation, the price of commonly used goods like canned tuna has skyrocketed.

Shareef also pointed out that the cost of domestic flights by government companies has also increased while the prices of building items have also hiked in recent weeks.

MP Shareef had called on the government to take measures to control the prices of the products made by state-owned companies.

The emergency motion came after State-owned fisheries company MIFCO increased the price of a case of canned tuna by MVR 150 after saying that the cost of goods on the global market has increased.

But the motion was thrown out of parliament as only 9 MPs present had voted to accept it for debate while 29 others had voted to throw the motion out of the parliament.
