Health Protection Agency HPA says close to 200 cases of Dengue were reported in the country last month.

HPA said in its monthly update on communicable diseases that a total of 185 had contracted the illness in May. HPA also said that this is 93 cases more than what was reported in April.

In April, HPA confirmed 92 cases of Dengue fever and in March it had confirmed just 26 cases of the fever in the country.

HPA had also said that the number of Dengue cases reported so far this year outnumbers the cases reported last year.

HPA had said that the number of cases of Dengue reported from the Greater Male' Area and the Atolls has increased over the last few weeks and advised that all must take precautionary measures to avoid the disease.

Dengue is a viral illness that is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito.

Meanwhile, HPA said that the number of common cold cases as well as diarrhea and vomiting cases reported in May was higher than that reported in April.

HPA said while 12,978 people sought treatment for the common cold in April, 13,361 people had sought treatment for the disease in May 2022.

Also, HPA had recorded 1,575 cases of vomiting and diarrhea in April while it had reported 1,824 such cases in the last month.
