Maldives Meteorological Services MET Office has issued an orange alert to major parts of the country as the weather in the Maldives continues to worsen.

MET Office had said that the orange alert is issued from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm today and that the alert is issued from Noonu Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll.

It said that strong winds of 34 – 40 mph with gust winds of 55 mph and rough seas are expected in these areas.

Meanwhile, local authorities have advised the public to remain vigilant about the worsening weather conditions in most parts of the country.

Maldives Police Services advised seafarers to abide by all the safety measures while traveling and to make sure that all their communication equipment is functioning before setting off on their trips.

The Police also advised those traveling on the Sinamale Bridge and Highway to be mindful of the windy conditions and torrential rains.

Maldives National Defence Force MNDF also warned seafarers to be mindful of the worsening conditions when traveling and advised captains and crew to take all necessary precautions in the weather.

MNDF also recommended the small sea vessels should avoid traveling during the night in this weather and said that vessels transporting goods must be mindful of the rough seas and must adhere to strict rules to avoid any mishaps.
