The Islamic Ministry has distributed Zakat Al Maal to those on the poor and needy registry.
The Ministry stated that the funds were distributed yesterday. It detailed that funds were given to 2,852 individuals on the poor and needy registry.
It added that each individual received MVR 5,000 as Zakat Al Maal.
The amount is MVR 1000 more than what was distributed in 2024, as 3,183 individuals received MVR 4000 as Zakat Al Maal last year.
The government distributed MVR 3500 per head as Zakat Al Maal in 2023 and MVR 3000 per head back in 2022.
The nisab for Zakat Al Maal was revised back in January.
In Islam, Nisab is the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to give zakat. It is a must for each individual who has had the Nisab amount for a year to give 2.5 percent of that as Zakat.
In the Maldives, Nisab is calculated using the price of Silver in the market.
The price of Silver is announced by the Central Bank of Maldives, MMA
