Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem says the main perpetrator of the attack against the Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, Aduham Ahmed has agreed to a plea deal with the state.
Speaking at a press conference today, PG Shameem said Aduham, who had detonated the IED that targeted the former President outside his office, had agreed to a plea deal that would see him given a 23-year jail sentence.
Shameem said that Aduham had been formerly accused of four charges. He said this includes carrying out an act of terrorism, conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, attempted murder using a sharp object or dangerous weapon, and supporting a terrorist organization.
If he is found guilty of these charges, he would get a jail sentence of 40 years but has struck a plea deal with the state, his jail sentence has now been cut down to 23 years.
But PG Shameem warned that if Aduham had turned back on his plea bargain during the trial, he would be given a jail sentence of 37 years.
The PG had also said that Aduham had given key statements during the investigation and that his statements would be presented to the court as evidence during the trial.
Shameem had revealed that three others had been charged today regarding this case.
