Health Emergency Operations Center HEOC Spokesperson Dr. Fathimath Nazla Rafeeq says that the curfew currently in place in the Greater Male' Area would be shortened amid the steady decline of COVID-19 cases reported in the country.

Speaking at the latest HEOC news briefing today, Dr. Nazla said the curfew would now be implemented from 04:00 pm to 04:00 am. She said that even with the change, residents would need a police-issued permit to go out during non-curfew hours.

Dr. Nazla explained that this change is being brought to allow individuals to go outside for their excises routines and they would be able to individually exercise between 04:00 am to 08:00 am every day. She added that such individuals would not require a permit during these times.

The HEOC spokesperson, who appeared in front of the media after a long absence, said these new measures would be implemented for the next two weeks and that authorities would continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Dr. Nazla had also said that mosques in the Greater Male' Area would be allowed to open and that individuals can perform their prayers but congregational prayers would still be stopped in the Greater Male' Area.

Maldivian authorities had initially announced the 16-hour curfew in the Greater Male' Area on May 26th amid a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases in the country, especially in the Greater Male' Area.
