The Parliament's Committee on Oversight of the Security Forces has summoned members of the MNDF Special Protection Group SPG to seek answers for its ongoing parliamentary inquiry.
The Committee, dubbed 241 Committee, in short, launched the inquiry to investigate the security breach that led to the attack against the speaker of the parliament Mohamed Nasheed last month.
Last week, the Committee had summoned some high-profile officials to seek answers for its inquiry and this includes the Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed and Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdullah Shamal.
The 241 Committee began this week by summoning members of the MNDF Special Protection Group who had acted as bodyguards to the Speaker.
The Parliament had shared pictures of the closed-door committee hearing in which several MNDF soldiers appeared to have been summoned to answer the inquiry.
This comes after the Defence Ministry had issued an internal circular stating that the 241 Committee cannot summon individual soldiers for its inquiry.
But this had become a point of multiple arguments with the most prominent one being the accusations thrown by the Speaker against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stating that the President was exerting his influence on the inquiry.
The 241 Committee itself had denied any influence from the President or the current administration to derail the inquiry.
