Authorities in the Maldives are probing the death of a 10-year-old girl who succumbed to the COVID-19 in the Maldives last night.
Fathimath Mishka Mohamed, the first child to die from COVID in the country, passed away while under treatment at IGMH after she was taken to the hospital's ER on the 31st of May.
Her grieving family had shared concerning accounts of how they had to wait almost three hours for an ambulance to come to their residence in Male' while the condition of their beloved daughter deteriorated with every minute.
She had been rushed to hospital soon after and according to her family, the little girl died while on ventilator support.
Earlier today, the Health Ministry said via Twitter that a case review was triggered on 2nd June 2021 regarding a delay in deploying an ambulance in response to an emergency call received on 31 May.
The Ministry also said that in light of the incident, immediate changes have been implemented to the mechanism that triggers ambulance deployment.
Meanwhile, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has begun its own probe into the alleged case of negligence that caused the death of the 10-year-old girl.
The Commission condemned negligent actions that caused the death of a patient and had said that it would conduct an investigation into the incident.
Several social media users have also called for immediate action against those responsible for the delay in deploying the ambulance and ultimately the girl's death.
