Earlier, President Solih had urged all to cast their votes in today's elections as soon as they can. He said after casting his own vote that though the election is being held a difficult time, it is imperative that as many people took part in the voting today.

A total of 2,234 candidates are competing in the local council elections today while another 1580 are competing for the seats on the WDC.

Some of the candidates have already been elected before a single ballot was cast as competitors in their respective seats had withdrawn their candidacy citing different reasons.
