President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih says MDP would win the Male' City mayoral seat and that it would secure the seat with 60 percent of the vote.

He made the comments while speaking to journalists after casting his vote in the ongoing Local Council Elections.

President Solih said that he hoped that MDP would secure a bigger majority in this election than the last parliamentary election which it had won in a landslide victory.

The President also said that although a poor voter turnout had been reported in the early hours of voting, more voters would go to cast their votes as the day progresses.

He said that the election would enhance the governance across the country and that he understands that the delayed election is being held at a difficult time.

But he urged all to cast their votes in today's election.

The much-delayed election is being held with several safety measures to deter the still-spreading COVID-19 pandemic.

This includes taking one's own pen for voting when going to cast their votes, as well as maintaining social distancing protocols while at the voting centers

The Elections Commission has also announced that it would allow those under isolation or quarantine due to COVID-19 to also take cast their votes in the election. It had set 05:00 pm to 06:00 pm as the time for such individuals to go to voting centers to cast their votes.
