Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed says he has received reports of attempts to install bugging devices at the parliament.

Speaking at today’s Parliamentary sitting, Nasheed said that the sergeant at arms of the parliament had reported the attempted installation of the listening devices at three rooms in the legislative house.

He said these three rooms include the room in which Parliamentary committees convene, the office of Vice Speaker of the Parliament MP Eva Abdullah, and the speaker’s office itself.

Speaker said such reports emerged after conversations between a police officer and security staff who work at the parliament. He added that the parliament’s security staff had reported the conversations to the sergeant at arms of the parliament.

Nasheed said that the parliament or the sergeant at arms should investigate this report and that he had no intention of reporting the incident to the police.

He had also forwarded the reports to the Parliamentary committee on security services for further investigation.

Nasheed thanked the police officer who had informed the parliamentary security of the attempts to bug the rooms in the parliament.
