Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation says the Direct Cargo Ferry Service between India and Maldives has begun its maiden journey from the Indian port of Tuticorin today.

The Ministry said the ferry was launched today by Minister for Transport Aishath Nahula and Indian Union Minister of State for Shipping Mansukh Mandaviya.

The Ministry said that the Cargo ship will sail to the Maldives with cargo from Tuticorin and Kochi and would dock at Kulhudufushi port first.

In a tweet, the Indian Minister of State for Shipping Mandaviya said that the ship will sail from Tuticorin to Kochi today and is expected to reach Male’ on 29th September 2020.

He also said that the ferry service had added a new chapter in the India-Maldives relationship and that it concretely fulfills the commitment made by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the Maldives in June last year.

Mandaviya added that the ferry service ensures alternate & less expensive modes of transport along with promoting economic, social, and cultural ties between India and the Maldives.

Maldivian officials have recently lauded the direct ferry service between the two neighbors and had said that it had great potential for both tourism and trade.
