Police have arrested a man who had threatened to light President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on fire while talking on a live program broadcasted on a local TV station.

Police said that it made the arrest today and that the man was a 47-year-old local man.

Police had earlier said that it would probe the incident that had captured the nation’s attention after a caller on Channel 13’s ‘Rayithunge Adu’ program threatened the President with bodily harm last Thursday.

Since then, Channel 13 had issued an apology for the incident and had said the caller expressed his own view and that the station had cut off the call once it realized the threat.

The opposition-oriented station also said that said the station would never incite violence and hatred and would not give anyone else the opportunity to carry such illegal acts in the future.

Nevertheless, Maldives Broadcasting Commission had said on Friday that it would also conduct an investigation into the said incident.

It said that it would further probe the incident in which Channel 13 had broadcasted live content that called for serious harm against President Solih.
